Reflecting on Online Teaching Courses

Our task in the morning session of virtual teaching was to find/choose an online course to look at and reflect on what kind of tools were used to enhance student learning.

I had a really hard time finding a link and/or open online course that applied to Art. Most of the sites I went to needed Adobe Flash Player which was unavailable, but after some web surfing I did find a course modual from pen state, which was titled Introduction to Visual Studies Art 010.

I started by going to the Online Course Catalog, which provided an excellent starting place to delve into the course content. Most of the course content was found in the Sample Course Syllabus link, but discovered that one can get easily lost in the abundance of information and links within links. This is something I will have to consider when teaching middle school students. One of the things I really liked about the course content was that the facilitator had a section titled Course Orientation. Within this section/module, the instructor welcomed the students by clicking on a video created by the instruction to introduce himself to his class. Even though I was unable to view the actual video, I liked how he Incorporated the technology aspect to make the connection with his students more personable. Each module after the Course Orientation began with an introduction about the section, objectives, and activities related to the material about the selected section. I didn't have full access to the activities but there appeared to be online quizzes about readings coupled with a "studio" activity, which i assume was a hands on application of the material. One of the things i was disappointed with, in this course, was the lack in the variety of technology. For example, instead of having a quiz on the material there are sites like LicidCharts or Prezi that could be used as tools to organize key ideas/information from the reading. This being said, I didn't have access to all of the course materials so there may be some of these technologies included that I was not aware of.
